Born on November 2, 1960, as Anwar Sardar 'Anu' Malik, Anu Malik is an Indian music composer, singer, and Television show judge, who dominated the Bollywood music industry from 1993 to 2004 and has produced more than 100 songs, as of 2021. Son of Indian music film director, and singer, Sardar Malik, he began his career as a music director in 1977 with ‘Hunterwali 77.’ Though the soundtrack went unnoticed, it opened doors for him in the music industry. After working in the soundtracks which were apparently box office failures, Malik garnered popularity by producing songs in the movie ‘Aasmaan’ (1984). Following his initial success, Malik received a Filmfare Award nomination for his soundtrack in the movie ‘Sohni Mahiwal.’ Between 1993 and 2004 he was a dominant figure in the Indian music industry. More so, after he produced soundtracks for some of the commercially successful and blockbuster hits of that time including ‘Baazigar’ (1993), ‘Akele Hum Akele Tum’ (1995), ‘Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi’ (1996), ‘Virasat’ (1997), ‘Judwaa’ (1997), ‘Border’ (1997), ‘Ishq’ (1997), ‘China Gate’ (1998), ‘Baadshah’ (1999), ‘Fiza’ (2000), ‘Har Dil Jo Pyaar Karega’ (2000), ‘Chori Chori Chupke Chupke’ (2001), ‘Main Hoon Na’ (2004), and ‘Murder’ (2004) among others. As a new generation of young music directors in 2005, his dominance in the Indian music industry decreased. A prolific music producer, Malik has worked with some of the prominent singers of Bollywood including Mohammed Rafi, Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhosle, Kumar Sanu, and Alka Yagnik, and collaborated with lyricist Javed Akhtar for several movies including ‘Border’ and ‘Refugee.’ He won National Film Award for ‘Refugee.’ Malik is also known for being one of the judges in the hit TV show Indian Idol. He had been part of the show in most seasons but had to leave the 2018 edition of the show following sexual harassment allegations, during the height of the #MeToo movement. He later appeared on the show in 2019 for three weeks, and in 2021, appeared as a replacement judge for the show.
